Carnar-Fin is an annual fishing event open to all recreational anglers. It has been held in the last week of May since its inception in 1992 by Gascoyne Traders, incorporating the June long weekend aimed at family involvement.

The event was so popular that it was announced that it would be repeated in 1993. However, Gascoyne Traders were unable to supply the time and manpower. This is when the Carnarvon Lions Club was invited to organise it as a fundraiser for the community, with Gascoyne Traders meeting administration costs and the basic prizes.​

Prizes were given to a variety of catches that could be caught from the beach, jetties, rocks or boats. No one was disadvantaged because they didn't have a boat to get to the islands.

What continues to be an essential aspect of the event is the emphasis on a safe, social and fun week. This has been successful because many of the competitors are regular attendees. People arrange their holidays around the event, and entries are received from people as far south as Esperance, Denmark and Albany, to Derby in the north.​​

After many years of being run by the Carnarvon Lions Club, there was a need for additional community support. The Carnarvon Chamber of Commerce stepped in to assist in 2019. Over the years, the event has continued to thrive, and in 2021, the Carnarvon Fishing Club Incorporated was formed to manage the event to ensure the continuation of the event.​
